With over 30 years of medical experience, Dr. Mentel’s approach to patient care is to always listen to the patient. In his words, “The patient understands their illness better than anyone else, because they live it.” His passion for Addiction Medicine stems from his work with pregnant patients with co-occurring substance use. Dr. Mentel realizes the power of non-stigmatized evidence-based treatment. Watching young mothers manage their substance use is not only a game changer for the patient, but it also changes the future trajectory of their children. He is now fully dedicated to practicing Addiction Medicine with the focus being not only being the individual’s recovery, but also on the family’s recovery.
Dr. Mentel is a graduate of Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is board certified in Family Medicine, Addiction Medicine and has completed a Fellowship in Obstetrics and Gynecology. His background is broadly diversified in clinical experience, medical education, and medical leadership. He started his career with the US Navy completing his internship at Naval Hospital Charleston. He then served as an Undersea Medical Officer during the first Gulf War. This was then followed by a residency in Family Medicine in Denver Colorado which led him to a position with the National Health Service Corps. Upon completion of his National Health Service Corps commitment, he then completed a Fellowship in surgical Obstetrics and Gynecology. Since completing his formal training, he has served as the Department Chair of Family Medicine at Bozeman Health and as Department Chairmanship of Family Medicine at Community Medical Center in Missoula. He has also served as the Medical Director at Community Medical Center in Missoula, as a Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Montana and as the President of Montana Medical Association. During all of his service and leadership responsibilities he maintained an active practice in Family Medicine with an obstetrics emphasis.
He enjoys living in Missoula, Montana and spends his spare time camping, hiking, and fly-fishing. He will even spend some fall weekends hunting pheasants with his golden retrievers if he can get them off the couch.
